As a cultural icon, what can the world’s favorite boy wizard teach us about such aspects of our culture as power, race, class, censorship, identity, knowledge, capitalism, good and evil, and more? We will explore these themes and others as they appear in both the books and films. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series has sold over 400 million books worldwide[1]. What makes these books so popular with children and adults? In this course, we will delve into the attraction and value of the Harry Potter books, their cultural influence, and their place within the large idea of literature.
